This double-sided flag has been Raleigh’s official flag since 1899. The first flag was designed by the Raleigh flag committee and sewn by Miss Kate Densen. The colors of the Raleigh flag come from Sir Walter Raleigh, whom the city was named after. The 16th-century English nobleman is also represented by his family crest depicted on the back of the flag, paying homage to the Olde English translation of Raleigh, “meadow of the deer.” Furthermore, the Latin text “Amore et Virtute,” seen on the crest’s banner, means “by love and virtue.” Raleigh’s official seal takes center stage on the front of the flag, embodying the “City of Oaks” nickname with a prominent oak tree.

This 3x5 flag is created with love and virtue, just as the design suggests. As residents of Raleigh, we provide only the best products to represent our city.
